Some fonts have additional note, "contains N fonts".
What does this mean?

Some font archives (ZIP files) contain more than 1 font file. For example, a font archive may contain an entire family of 3 fonts, the normal, bold and italic styles of the font. Since authors usually request that their font archives be distributed in unmodified form only, Font Paradise cannot separate these fonts. However, they are listed separately in our database (all 3 styles have their own image and description). Also, Font viewer Installer will automatically install all fonts contained in an archive if there is more than 1 font.

How to use fonts for a web site ?

The problem: I've tried to install a font,
but it still does not appear in my font lists.

Maybe you've got bad fonts. There are CDs with 10,000 fonts for only $1. Many of these are cheap fonts. Stick to Microsoft TrueType or Adobe fonts.

The most common explanation for this problem is the limit in some versions of Windows on how many fonts can be installed at one time (roughly 1,000). Remove some infrequently-used fonts from the Fonts folder and try to install the font again.

For graphics professionals and general font freaks who boast large collections of fonts, the work-around for the 1,000-font limit is to keep most of your fonts outside of the Fonts folder and install them only as necessary.

For typographic power-users, there are font-management applications that can streamline the process of font activation. Adobe Type Manager Deluxe is probably the most popular. Others include Extensis Suitcase, Neuber Typograf, DiamondSoft Font Reserve, and Bitstream Font Navigator (discontinued).

Relaunch the target application after the new font's installation. Make sure to have copied the .ttf file, and not the zip into the Fonts folder.
In the worst of the cases, reboot your computer.

How many fonts may one install?

Windows is supposed to be able to manage about 1000 fonts. But avoid to install too many fonts at one time because that slows down the system. A lot of programs have to load to memory all installed fonts to be able to run.

So it is better to put fonts you use regularly in the Fonts folder. Keep the rest in any other folder or storage device, so you can install/uninstall them as needed.

If you use more than three or four fonts in a document, you're going to look a bit crazy. Fonts are part of the design: use one font for headers and another font for body. If you use too many fonts, then fonts don't mean anything and the reader gets confused.

I have blank entries in my font list.

If the Font Manager gets "confused" as to what fonts are actually available or unavailable, (usually after an unsuccessful uninstall or install) blank font entries can appear under categories. The solution to is to remove the font registry key, and then remove all FPV files from the Font Manager program folder. To remove the registry key, go to Start, select Run, type in Regedit and click on OK. Once in the registry, go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE \GST\Fonts. Highlight Fonts and delete the key. Next, open Explorer and go to Program Files, greenstreet, Font Manager. Highlight and delete all files with a .FPV extension. Last, simply reinstall the product.

After installing all the fonts my computer has slowed down.

It is not advisable to install all the fonts onto your machine as this could affect the operation of your computer. A warning is given if you try to install a number of fonts that will increase the number of fonts on your computer to more than 500. Installing more than 500 fonts onto your computer can cause a reduction in speed. We recommend that you limit yourself to a number less than 500.

How to group fonts and installing on demand

Grouping fonts further by job or style allows even more control over the fonts (like C:\Fonts\A). You can browse fonts in your fonts folder using Font Viewer, pick the right font for your job and then install the font. That resolves the problem keeping thousands of fonts installed all the time. Just keep them in folders and install/uninstall on demand. Making Viewer is required when you have many fonts. Don't keep over about 500 fonts in one folder, otherwise you'll be unable to browse entire folder at once in Font Viewer, especially if you have already large number of installed fonts.

Strange characters appear

Depending on your browser and operating system, some special characters and formatting will not be displayed correctly.  This is especially noticable with browsers Microsoft Internet Explorer.  Some fonts are specific to the Windows operating system and will not be displayed correctly on other platforms.

How do I install a font manually?

First, if your fonts are compressed (ZIP files), you need an uncompressing program (like WinZip) to get font files out of ZIP files. Extract them to an empty folder of your choice. Then:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click the Fonts icon.
3. On the File menu, click Install New Font.
4. In the "Folders" box, select the folder that contains your font files. It will take a moment to load the font names into "List of Fonts" box.
5. Click to select the "Copy fonts to Fonts folder" check box.
6. In the "List of fonts" box, click the font you want. To select all of the available fonts, click Select All. To select several nonadjacent fonts, click the name of one font, and then hold down CTRL and click the name of each additional font. To select several adjacent fonts, click the name of the first font in the sequence, and then hold down SHIFT and click the name of the last font.
7. After you have selected the fonts you want to install, click the OK button. The fonts will now appear in the Fonts folder.

 I cannot see the bold, bold italic, or italic versions of the font in the Font Menu, even though I know I installed them. Where are they?

Some designers bundle their fonts in families. This is usually the case when the font family contains more than the four basic weights (regular, italic, bold, and bold italic). Examples of additional weights include medium, light, and black, to name just a few. In these cases, only the "regular" weight will show in the font menu, which means you will have to select the attribute (italic, bold or bold italic) from the style menu. The same would hold true for the "light" typeface name. For example, the main typeface could be Bodoni Light, and you would have to select the italic attribute when switching to Bodoni Light Italic.
