Baptismal font, Sobata, Negev desert - fourth century - Illustration

Christian Century , Oct 23, 2002

CHRISTIAN INITIATES who used this cruciform font, part of a fourth-century church in Sobata, in the Negev desert, would descend the steps on one side, have water poured on their heads, and emerge on the other side as members of the church. After the Emperor Constantine established his capital in the eastern part of the Roman Empire, Christianity expanded in the Negev and in what is now southern Jordan. This was the home of Nabatean Arabs, who were great traders, and who chiseled monumental buildings out of the sandstone mountains, most famously at their capital city of Petra. Jane Taylor recounts their achievement and provides photographic evidence of the haunting dead city in Petra and the Lost Kingdoms of the Nabateans (Harvard University Press, 224 pp., 839.95). Petra is popular these days. Another illustrated book on the topic, Petra, by Maria Giulia Amadasi Guzzo and Eugenia Equini Schneider, is just out from the University of Chicago Press (9.04 pp.,
