Adventures in TrueType - typefaces
Home Office Computing , Sept, 1993 by Kay Yarborough Nelson
There`s a Lot More to Life Than Courier
Windows brings out the hidden graphic designer in us all--especially when it
comes to using lots of fonts for different looks in our documents. Even if you`re
not doing desktop publishing, you might find yourself using certain fonts for letters
and reports and others for attention-getting presentations.
TrueType fonts are unique typefaces for Windows and the Macintosh. Windows comes
with 15 of these fonts, such as Arial and Times New Roman. No matter what kind of
printer you have-- an inexpensive dot matrix or a professional PostScript laser
printer--you can use TrueType fonts. TrueType fonts have several advantages over
PostScript and others: They are usually cheaper, take up much less space on your
harddisk drive, and show onscreen what you`ll get when you print the document, with
no jagged edges.
TAKE YOUR PICK
I`ve always been a fan of SWFTE`s TypeCase collections--I, II, and III-- which
include more than 100 fonts at the low price of $50 each. Get I and H for text and
display fonts; IH is primarily display fonts. Each collection comes with a bonus
symbol or icon font--III has a holiday symbol font, H has an international symbol
font, and I has a PC keys icon font (SWFTE, 724 Yorklyn Rd., Hockessin. DE 19707;
[302] 243-1740, [800] 237-9383).
Microsoft`s TrueType Font Packs (1 and 2) each provide 44 TrueType fonts, and
most of them are suitable for general business documents and presentations. The
small manual that comes with Font Pack 2 can answer almost any question you may
have about fonts--resident vetsus downloadable fonts, serif and sans serif, good
type design basics, or creating special effects. That manual is a little gem (Microsoft,
One Microsoft Way, Redmond, WA 98052; [206] 882-8080, [800] 426-9400;
For whimsical headlines--and also for attention-getting presentation graphics--
check out the Li`l Bits Font Packs from Bitstream (215 First St., Cambridge, MA
02142; [617] 497-6222, [800] 522-3668). These give you Star Trek fonts, Flintstones
characters, and winter holiday graphic images; you probably won`t use them a lot,
but they`re only
If you have a mixed PC-Macintosh setup, you`ll find several vendors making matching
TrueType fonts for each system. Two good sources are Microsoft`s TrueType Master
Set ($100), which gives you matching Windows fonts (such as Arial and Lucida) for
your Mac, and Image Club`s New Faces collections (Image Club, 729 24th Ave. SE,
Calgary, Alberta, Canada I2G IP5; [403] 2628008, [800] 66 9410;
FONT CONFUSION
If you install a lot of fonts, your font menus will get so long that they`ll
be hard to use. If you`re frequently switching between fonts, such as Courier New
(near the top of the menu) and Times New Roman (near the bottom of the list), it`s
easy to get lost. One easy thing you can do to slim down weighty Font menus is click
the TrueType button in the Fonts control panel and then click both Enable TrueType
fonts and Show Only TrueType Fonts in Applications. Then, after you restart Windows,
only TrueType fonts will be listed. Many font collections, such as SWFTE`s TypeCase
I and III and Microsoft`s TrueType Font Packs 2, come with font-management utilities
that let you create sets of fonts for different types of jobs, such as headline
fonts and decorative fonts.
HOW ABOUT SOME GOSSIP?
Expect M.Y.O.B, both Mac and Windows versions, to add a payroll application in
the next release, rumored to ship around the first of next year. This will be good
news for those of you who use the popular M.Y.O.B. financial program and have a
few employees. Watch for a Windows version of WordPerfect`s DataPerfect-- it`s on
the way (as is an updated WordPerfect Works). If you`re thinking about getting into
desktop publishing, keep an eye out for a program called PagePlus from Serif Inc.
(P.O. Box 803 Nashua, NH 03061; [603] 889-8650, [800] 6973743; $60), which claims
to do almost everything Aldus PageMaker can do.
