Take a Test with FlashQuiz

PC Magazine , March, 2001

Flash cards and multiple-choice quizzes are classic study tools and this issue`s utility, FlashQuiz, provides both. Each quiz may contain up to 512 questions consisting of text and graphic images. The program scores multiple-choice quizzes. Each question may have up to five possible answers, and you may choose whether each question allows multiple correct answers. Flash card quizzes are scored by the user. When the program displays the correct answer, users must tell the program whether their given answers were right or wrong.

For either type of quiz, you can set time limits for the entire quiz or for each question. You determine the point value for each question, and you can reduce a question`s point value as time elapses. You can record the results of each quiz in a log file that, once decrypted and saved to a separate text file, uses a comma-delimited format that can be easily imported into spreadsheet or database programs. Because FlashQuiz can be used in a classroom environment, its quiz files and score logs are encrypted and password-protected to prevent from peeking and unauthorized tampering.

FlashQuiz runs under Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, and Windows 2000. The Microsoft Visual C++ 6 source code for FlashQuiz is provided with the utility for those interested in seeing how it works.

Creating a Quiz

To install FlashQuiz, place the program files (Flashquiz.exe, Flashquiz.hlp, and Flashquiz.cnt) in the folder of your choice, then create a shortcut to Flashquiz.exe. When you run the program, it will register the Flashquiz document type (.fqz extension) and add itself to the Add/Remove Programs list in Control Panel for easy removal.

FlashQuiz is a simple, dialog-based application. The stack of buttons in the main dialog let you create a new quiz, load an existing quiz, edit the currently loaded quiz, or take the currently loaded quiz (see Figure 1). Context-sensitive help is available for any of FlashQuiz`s dialogs by pressing the F1 key.

To create a new quiz, click the Create A New Quiz button. FlashQuiz will then prompt you to enter a password, which you must provide to either edit the quiz or access its score log (see Figure 2). Passwords are case-sensitive, cannot be blank, and may be up to 32 characters long.

Next, FlashQuiz presents the Quiz Parameters dialog (see Figure 3). In the Quiz Type section, choose which type of quiz to create, either Multiple-choice or Flash Card. To the right of that, the Logging section lets you determine whether the results of a quiz will be recorded. Score logs are always stored in the same folder as the quiz file; they`ll have the same base name but FQL extensions. The logs are encrypted to prevent tampering. The Export log button lets you decrypt the log file to a text file, so you can import it into another program. The Delete log button lets you delete the log file without having to go digging around to find it. If either of these buttons is disabled, the log file does not exist. For details on the format of a decrypted log file, refer to the online help.

In the Presentation section, you may set an overall time limit for the quiz--anywhere from 1 to 300 minutes (5 hours). If you check the Randomize questions box, FlashQuiz will present your questions in a different order each time the quiz is taken. For multiple-choice quizzes, checking the Randomize answers box also tells FlashQuiz to present the answers for each question in a different order every time. These options are particularly useful in a classroom environment. Randomizing the questions and answers for a multiple-choice quiz makes it impossible for test takers to cheat by memorizing a stolen answer key. The Review answers check box applies to multiple-choice quizzes only. It determines whether FlashQuiz displays the correct answer for a question when the given answer is incorrect or when time for answering has run out.

The Default question font section lets you select a default font setting for new questions added to the current quiz. Checking the Use custom font box presents a standard font-selection dialog. Once you have chosen a custom font, the Change custom font button lets you change your selection. Click on the Apply to all existing questions button if you want the font you selected to be used for all questions in the quiz and not just the ones you add after changing the setting.

Use the Default Scoring and Timing section to set default values that will be assigned as you create new questions. You can override these settings for individual questions. As with the font controls, changing a setting here does not affect any existing questions unless you click the Apply to all existing questions button. This brings up a dialog that asks you to select which of the three settings-score, time limit, and reduce score over time-to apply to existing questions.

Use the Change Password button to change the password for the current quiz. You cannot change the password without providing the current password.

Font Creator Program 4.1

The Font Creator Program puts font creation within the grasp of the average PC user, would-be typographers and graphic designers. With this application you can create and edit TrueType font files. You can use the modified fonts in Windows 3.11 and higher. Features include the ability to convert (scanned) bitmaps (.bmp files) to TrueType outlines, thus enabling you to create your own signature, logo and handwriting. In addition, unlimited undo and redo and repeat options are available. The modified fonts can be saved and then used in popular word processing and illustration programs. The editor lets you easily select any installed font, displaying the entire character set complete with descriptions of every letter, number, and special character. Once you`ve perfected your work of art, a click on the program`s toolbar will install your creation.
